The 2016 World Leadership Congress (WLC) will take place from July 23-30 at Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois.
HOBY’s annual international youth leadership event, The World Leadership Congress (WLC), is a dynamic leadership program that brings together students (or “ambassadors” as we like to call them here at HOBY) from the U.S. and abroad. This group of over 400 ambassadors comprised of U.S. high school students and international students from all four corners of the globe convene for a week-long, life-changing, educational and leadership skills building program.
HOBY’s World Leadership Congress provides today’s youth with the training and tools to become the leaders of tomorrow. Participants have access to a distinguished group of leaders from a variety of backgrounds including business, government, international affairs, science and technology, medicine, media, and education. The week long program includes interactive and dynamic educational sessions, collaborative workshops, leadership exercises, community service projects and individualized trainings. HOBY’s ambassadors leave the WLC more mature individuals, more aware of the world around them, having forged life-long friendships with like-minded HOBY Ambassadors from around the globe. Most importantly, participants leave empowered to make meaningful and lasting contributions to their communities.

“Attending WLC in Washington D.C. was one of the most eye-opening and exciting experiences of my life! I met so many wonderful people who are constantly changing the world in amazing ways. With a roommate from Taiwan and group members from around the world, I was exposed to so many new perspectives and lifestyles. Powerful speakers, community service projects, and group activities inspired us all through friendship and a common goal, creating a powerful network of leaders that will last a lifetime.”

“I was selected to represent North Florida HOBY at the World Leadership Congress in 2009. It is one of the most intense, exciting and OUTSTANDING experiences I have ever had. I had the opportunity to meet young leaders from across the country and the world, it was held in Washington, D.C., and it was the first time I ever flew in an airplane. That is a big deal for me; coming from an incredibly small town, I did not have these type of opportunities growing up. Attending the WLC opened my mind to the fact that we are living in a global community and how important it is to make a difference in it. I learned to become a much more confident and aware leader, and I realized that I want to be a part of this ever growing global community. I made great friends and created unforgettable memories. HOBY WLC came along at a very important point in my life, and I am so grateful for it.”

“The week I spent in Chicago was the best week of my life, hands down. Flying on my own and meeting and becoming best friends with teens around the world who are just like me was so eye-opening and felt unbelievably natural. From when I landed at Midway, to my departure, there was not one minute I went without smiling, cheering, or being positive. At WLC I learned to work with others, grow my ideas, and spend time working to the benefit of the less fortunate. Like I said, I met the best friends anyone could ask for: Elizabeth McNamee, Jimmy Thomas, Josh Krause, the list goes on. I also learned to be openminded and accept other cultures, values, and beliefs. Not a day passes by that I don’t keep in touch with one if not several of my fellow WLCers. Facebook, group messaging, Skype, ooVoo, snapchat, the whole shabang. I even got to meet the real Hugh O’Brian! It was such an honor. There’s so much else I could say, but it’s truly something you have to experience to fully understand.”
