Congratulations for being selected to represent your school and community at the 2018 Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Mid-Florida Seminar. As you prepare for this exciting experience, we are sure that you have a few questions and hope that you can find many of the answers here. If you have a questions that are not addressed on the selection process or seminar curriculum, please let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Each September, HOBY Sophomore Registration Kits are sent to over 22,000 public, private and charter high schools in the United States. All current tenth grade students are eligible for selection to attend one of the three- or four-day weekend seminars held in their area each spring. HOBY Mid-Florida does not decide how each school’s representative is selected. Some schools use an essay or interview process, while others use a nomination process. Others may simply select a student from among their sophomore campus leaders. The school’s contact person preliminarily registers the student in the online registration system. In certain circumstances, multiple students from each school may be able to attend.
The curriculum for the seminar is based on HOBY’s vision to motivate and empower individuals to make a positive difference in our global society. HOBY believes that students like you represent the future leaders of the world—in business, education, government, or whatever field you choose—because you are someone who will make a difference. By developing and understanding effective and compassionate leadership, we hope you will be able to realize your full potential and take positive action in your home, school, workplace, community, and the world.
Your HOBY experience will help you develop leadership from three perspectives:
1. Personal Leadership
2. Group Leadership
3. Leadership for Society
